The battle for Instant-On device boot

So here's something very interesting.

The two leading linux netbook operating system vendors, Xandros and Linpus are introducing their own product concepts which are going to compete with splashtop's "instant-on" technology.

Linpus is introducing QuickOS:  http://eeepc.itrunsonlinux.com/the-news/282-linpus-quickos-puts-linux-into-fifth-gear

And Xandros is introducting Presto: http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/19/xandros-instant-on-presto-linux-distro-now-available-for-downlo/

There are going to be a lot of interesting options out and about. Will the idea of a very quick booting streamlined operating system like Splashtop and its competing cousins be the next big thing?  Or will general purpose OSes still be the dominate pre-install for the new weird mix of devices that are going to be competing in the netbook space between a smartphone and a laptop?
